Shops, palm trees and outdoor café seating along Gallery Walk on Tamborine Mountain.

Tamborine Mountain (Tamborine Mtn) or Mount Tamborine (Mt Tamborine)?

It’s a question that has puzzled visitors, GPS systems and the occasional postie for years.

Let’s begin with the part that sounds like a riddle: you can be in Mount Tamborine, on Tamborine Mountain.

Tamborine Mountain is the place you’ve come to explore: the ridge, its villages, rainforest walks, lookouts, cafés and winding roads. Mount Tamborine is also the name of one of its historic village areas. The other two are North Tamborine and Eagle Heights.

Eagle Heights is home to Gallery Walk, where an innocent plan to “have a quick look” can become an afternoon of browsing shops, galleries and cafés.

North Tamborine has a village feel of its own, with places to eat, everyday local life and easy starting points for exploring the mountain.

Mount Tamborine completes the trio. Yes, that means the sentence from the beginning really does work. We promise we didn’t make this up just to confuse the postie.

And just when you think you’ve mastered it, there’s Tamborine. That’s a separate village down off the mountain. If you’ve arranged to meet someone “at Tamborine,” it may be wise to ask one more question before setting off.

What about Tambourine?

There is no ‘u’ in the spelling of our version of Tamborine Mountain… but we would love to see ‘you’ in Tamborine Mountain.

Are we on the Gold Coast, then?

Tamborine Mountain belongs to Queensland’s Scenic Rim, and it is also one of the places people have in mind when they dream of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Think rainforest instead of beachfront, mountain air instead of sea breeze, and a sunset worth slowing down for.

From Shambala Estate, you can enjoy the mountain itself or use it as a beautiful base for exploring more of the hinterland. That might mean a morning among the shops on Gallery Walk, an afternoon by a lookout, or a day with no firmer plan than finding somewhere lovely for lunch.

And what’s beyond the mountain?

Lonely Planet named the Scenic Rim as one of its top 10 regions in the world for 2022. And with good reason! Once you’ve explored the gem of the Scenic Rim (Tamborine Mountain), there are plenty more reasons to make this a longer stay.

Canungra & the Goat Track

At the base of the mountain, Canungra is a lovely village for a wander through its shops and a leisurely coffee. The winding mountain road known locally as the Goat Track makes the journey part of the story.

Beechmont & O’Reilly’s

Beechmont offers a different view of the hinterland, with access towards the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park. O’Reilly’s, reached by a different route through the Canungra Valley, is another way to experience Lamington’s extraordinary rainforest. Choose one for an unhurried day rather than trying to race between both.

Cellar doors

Follow the region’s country roads to boutique cellar doors.

Natural Bridge

Set aside a longer outing for Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park. These places aren’t all on Tamborine Mountain—and that’s rather the point. There is much more to discover once you’ve found your way here.

You’ve worked out where you are. Now stay a while.
