WHERE TO BEGIN
PLANNING YOUR WEDDING
A calm guide to the first decisions that shape everything that follows.
Planning a wedding should begin with possibility, not pressure. Before colours, flowers, menus and timelines, there are a few thoughtful conversations that can make every later decision feel clearer and easier.
You do not need to know exactly what your wedding will look like. You only need to understand what matters most to you both.
01 — HOW DO YOU WANT THE DAY TO FEEL?
Begin with feeling rather than detail.
Do you imagine something intimate and unhurried, joyful and abundant, elegant and romantic, or relaxed and surrounded by nature?
Choose three or four words that describe the experience you want to create. These become a useful compass: when choices multiply, ask which option brings you closer to that feeling.
02 — WHAT MATTERS MOST TO EACH OF YOU?
Separately, write down the three things that matter most to you. Then compare your lists.
You may discover shared priorities—beautiful food, time with family, a meaningful ceremony, live music, exceptional photography or a setting that feels like an escape. You may also find that you value different parts of the celebration. Both are useful to understand early.
Agree on the few elements you will protect, and where you are comfortable being flexible.
03 — WHAT INVESTMENT FEELS COMFORTABLE?
A clear financial range gives you freedom to make decisions with confidence.
Consider not only the venue, food and drinks, but also attire, photography, entertainment, flowers, transport, stationery, accommodation and any celebrations surrounding the wedding day.
Allow a small contingency for ideas that emerge later. The aim is not to account for every dollar immediately—it is to create a realistic framework that reflects your priorities.
When comparing venues or packages, compare like with like. A lower starting price can become very different once staffing, furniture, styling, coordination, food, drinks and essential hire items are added.
04 — WHO DO YOU WANT AROUND YOU?
Your guest list influences almost every major decision: the atmosphere, venue, reception style, food and beverage costs, accommodation and the amount of time you can spend with each person.
Begin with the people without whom the day would not feel complete. Then create a second group of people you would love to include if the setting and investment allow.
You do not need to settle the final number immediately. A realistic range is enough to begin meaningful conversations with venues.
05 — WHAT KIND OF PLACE SUITS YOUR CELEBRATION?
Think beyond how a venue looks in photographs. Consider how the day will move and how people will feel within it.
Can the ceremony, photographs and reception unfold naturally? Is there a beautiful wet-weather alternative? Will older guests and people with mobility needs be comfortable? Are there quiet places to pause? Does the venue still feel special when every space is being used?
The right venue should support the experience you want—not require you to manage around it.
06 — WHEN WOULD YOU LIKE TO MARRY?
You may begin with a meaningful date, a favourite season or simply a broad window. Each approach is valid.
Consider the weather you enjoy, daylight, school holidays, guest travel, accommodation demand and the type of celebration you picture.
Some couples value a Saturday in peak season; others find that a Friday, Sunday or quieter month creates greater flexibility. A little openness around dates can also provide a better choice of venue and suppliers.
07 — WHAT WILL THE EXPERIENCE BE LIKE FOR YOUR GUESTS?
Your guests will remember how the celebration felt. Think about their journey from the first invitation to the final farewell.
Consider travel times, parking or transport, accommodation, the time between ceremony and reception, dietary needs, temperature and comfort, and how clearly information will be communicated.
If people are travelling, the wedding can become more than a single day. Welcome drinks, a relaxed breakfast or time to explore Tamborine Mountain can turn it into a shared escape.
08 — WHO DO YOU WANT BESIDE YOU?
A wedding is shaped not only by its setting, but by the people who bring it to life.
Look for a team that listens before making recommendations, communicates clearly and makes you feel calmer after every conversation.
Ask who will support you during planning, who will be present on the day and how the venue and suppliers respond when circumstances change.
Experience matters. So do warmth, judgement and the feeling that what matters to you genuinely matters to them.
WHAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO DECIDE YET
You do not need a complete colour palette, a finished run sheet, every song, every flower or every styling detail before you begin.
Those choices become easier once you know your priorities, approximate guest numbers, financial range, preferred timing and venue.
Give yourselves permission to make decisions in the right order.
YOUR FIRST VENUE CONVERSATION
Before visiting a venue, take these five things with you:
• The feeling you want to create
• Your approximate guest range
• Your preferred dates or season
• Your comfortable investment range
• The questions that matter most to you
Then pay attention to more than the spaces. Notice whether the team understands your vision, explains things clearly and helps you imagine the day as a complete experience.
